Reservation Policy of B-Schools

At a broad level, we can classify the B-schools into the ones which do not reserve seats for any group and admit students purely based on merit, and the ones which follow policy of reservation of seats for certain categories of applicants.

The reservation policy followed by the B-schools can be classified into the following categories:

1. National level Govt B-schools (Ex. IIMs, IITs, NITIE, FMS, TISS, IIFT, IIFM)

These institutions follow a standard national reservation policy:

  • Other Backward Classes – Non-creamy (OBC-NC): 27%
  • Scheduled Class (SC): 15%
  • Scheduled Tribe (ST): 7.5%
  • Differently Abled (DA): 5%
  • Economically Weaker Sections (EWS): 10%
2. State level B-schools

Where admissions are handled by University or DTE authorities (Ex. OUCBM, All Maharashtra Colleges - MMS programme).

The seats are reserved for the home state students (domicile), and the percentage of seats reserved varies from one state to another:

  • Andhra Pradesh: 100% seats are reserved for AP domicile applicants.
  • Maharashtra: 85% seats are reserved for state domicile students.
  • Regional Reservation: Out of the 85% reserved in Maharashtra, 70% of seats are meant for local university students.

In addition to regional reservations, the state government norms pertaining to community-based reservations will also be in place.

3. Minority Institutions (Ex. LIBA, Rizvi)

Usually, minority-run institutions offer 50% of their seats to applicants hailing from the minority community:

  • LIBA: Reserves 50% seats for Catholic Christians.
  • Rizvi (Mumbai): Reserves 50% seats for Muslim applicants.
4. Private Universities

Some private B-schools, like those affiliated with Symbiosis International University, offer reservation to specific groups:

  • SC, ST, and Differently Abled (DA) applicants.
  • Kashmiri migrants (KM).
